Endangered Species

Grassy Park Community: Endangered Species – almost extinct in your Community. Have you heard of the Barber`s Cape Flats Ranger Butterfly (Kedestes). It only occurs in one, very small, location in the world which happens to be around the corner in the False Bay Nature Reserve and surrounds. There are only 50 known Butterflies in existence in this space and Nature Conservationists & Rangers have been hard at work since 2017 trying to re-introduce Barber`s Cape Flats Ranger Butterfly into the spaces it historically occured – in our local environment and communities – lost due to the rapid urbanisation of our local communities . A captive rearing and breeding program the Kedestes Butterfly Conservation Project is underway to boost its numbers Get out there – appreciate our local natural environment deeply, tread lightly in Community Spirit grassy park, cape town, south africa

End of the Heritage Shop Era

Grassy Park Community: End of the Heritage Shop Era and how does this reflect Community SpiritMr. Jeetesh Nathoo and the Heritage Shop Legacy he held in Grassy Park brings to a close the chapter of the ‘Lekkers Vannie Change’ era which began at this old shop by the Quetin Family who originally owned it. This shop has passed hands – and new owners have already moved in and ‘diversified’ the store – November 2020.Local families – as customers remember buying goods on the ‘bookie’, products delivered by bicycle and the shop owners knowing the entire family unit by name. Jeetesh finds himself dolely at the end of a 41 year Legacy and Community Heritage which began with his father after the Quetin Families decades-long stint in this shop which began in the 1940`s. Here local kids remember drooling over the latest Spin Tops, Yo-Yo’s and BMX accessories besides the ‘Naame Lekkers’, ‘Sagte Wilson Bloks’ and ‘Granid`ella Sukkas’ among many other treats and novelties which enthralled us. The story of this shop and other local spaces like it reminds us of our sense of community and rootednessThese original, period specific, heritage shops are the last vestiges of our bygone Slow Living customs and traditions which underpinned our local Community Spirit. ‘Nathoos Shop’ being one of the remaining very few. Gone too soonWe wish Jeetesh and his family Good Speed on their future endeavors and Thank You for holding heritage spacegrassy park, cape town, south africa

Local Heritage & Champion Trees

Grassy Park Community: Local Heritage & Champion Trees – If ever we had to conserve a stand of trees would have been the grove of Coral Trees which grew across the area which is Misrole Rd Grassy Park during the late 1800`s into the 1940`s.

Mrs . Cupido (90) recounts how they used to play among the ‘forest of orange-flower trees’ as children on the families large grounds in this space. The trees grew across the property and filled the adjacent street blocks. These trees and especially this tree grove was an iconic representation of the rural / Peri-urban character of Grassy Park which has been lost to rapid sub-urbanisation.

The Common Coral & Coastal Coral were popular trees encountered and planted in homegardens throughout Grassy Park in the early 1900`s. The abundant flower nectar attracts numbers of nectar feeding birds like Sugarbirds, Golden Weavers, Starlings, Bulbuls and many more which are abundant in our local neighbourhoods.

These trees were also planted as medicinal trees within the rich local tradition & custom of healing from the garden. Ear Ache, wounds, abscesces, arthritis, and even an anti-coagulant among other treatments. The Coral Tree is an indigenous tree which is seen as a Royal Tree among certain South African cultures and planted on graves and close to watering holes.

You will still see them dotted around older properties in Grassy Park especially our old Wood & Iron homes – Share some pictures here, for Heritage sake

Our Local Landscape

Grassy Park Community: Local Heritage – our local landscape , once – and to a degree- still an ultra-abundant natural environment was a natural attraction and home for our Indigenous Peoples who found our vast grazing pastures, rich foraging heathfields, abundant trout fishing wetlands, rich large & small game hunting grounds, kaleidoscope of birdlife, pristine rivers & watercourses, proximity to the ocean & mountain, among other, within a 30 minute walk of all local facets – a natural paradise where Kinship & Stewardship borne from abundance was the cultural imprint.

Does a Communities dis-connection from its heritage & local environment affect its connection to itself and how does that affect Community Spirit
